What is guided meditation?
Guided meditation is a form of relaxation used to focus the mind. A person creates imagery to help with specific conditions or physical symptoms. It is a technique that has been used for centuries.
Patients can use this technique by listening to tapes that guide them with soothing music and narration to an imaginary place in their minds where they feel safe, peaceful and protected.
The patient experiences a deepened connection with the core self--reducing stress by creating a relaxed and peaceful inner state.
This technique is becoming increasingly popular in healthcare settings as a complement to conventional medical care for chronic physical conditions, such as headaches, asthma, and hypertension, as well as to help individuals relieve stress, prepare for surgery or lose weight.
Why use guided meditation?
Lifestyle changes, or conditions that require medical or surgical intervention, often cause patients to feel out of control, threatened or overwhelmed. Fear of pain is a commonly expressed concern.
Clinical studies have shown that anxiety can intensify pain, prolong recovery time and lower the immune system. Guided imagery can bring about the state of mind and body most conducive to healing--deep relaxation and positive focus.
Guided imagery gives patients and their families an opportunity to identify fears and a means to work through them. It provides a "mental escape" at a difficult and challenging time in their lives.
